Frigidaire Recalls 180,000 Gas Ranges Over Delayed Ignition Burn Hazard

Electrolux has recalled more than 180,000 Frigidaire-branded gas ranges sold in the U.S. and Canada after at least 62 reports of delayed oven ignition — some resulting in burns and singed hair. The recall, issued in cooperation with the CPSC, covers 30-inch and 36-inch freestanding models under the Frigidaire, Frigidaire Gallery, and Frigidaire Professional lines manufactured between January 2022 and December 2024.
What's Failing
The oven igniter assembly in affected units doesn't light the gas burner on the first attempt. Gas accumulates in the oven cavity for several seconds — sometimes longer — before ignition occurs. When the gas finally catches, the result is a sudden flame burst out of the oven door or vent. Electrolux traced the root cause to a batch of igniters with inconsistent hot-surface element resistance, causing unpredictable ignition delays.
Of the 62 reported incidents, 11 involved minor burns. No hospitalizations have been reported so far, but several consumers described flames shooting from the oven vent with enough force to singe cabinet faces and nearby curtains.
What Technicians Need to Know
The cooktop burners are NOT part of this recall — only the oven igniter assembly is affected. If a customer calls about burner issues on these models, that's a separate diagnosis.
If you encounter any of these models on a service call, here's the protocol:
1. Check the model and serial number. The affected range list is on the CPSC recall page. Serial numbers fall within specific manufacturing date ranges — not every unit of these models is affected.
2. Do not attempt a field repair with aftermarket igniters. Electrolux is providing a redesigned igniter assembly (not the same part number as the original) at no cost through authorized service channels. The replacement includes updated wiring and a modified mounting bracket.
3. Advise customers to stop using the oven immediately. Cooktop burners are safe to use. The oven function is the only hazard.
The Repair
Electrolux is shipping the replacement igniter kits to authorized servicers. The repair itself is straightforward — remove the oven bottom panel, disconnect the old igniter, install the replacement, and verify ignition timing. Should take 30-45 minutes for an experienced tech. The key difference in the new assembly: a lower-resistance hot surface element that reaches ignition temperature roughly 40% faster, closing the window for gas accumulation.
Consumers can schedule a free in-home repair through Electrolux's recall hotline or website. Independent shops working on these units outside the recall program should source the updated part number, not the original.
Broader Pattern
This is the third gas range recall in the past 18 months involving delayed ignition. The underlying issue — igniter degradation causing delayed gas lighting — cuts across multiple brands and price points. For technicians, it's worth adding an ignition-timing check to your standard gas range inspection. Light the oven, count seconds to ignition. Anything over 60 seconds warrants a closer look at the igniter's resistance and the gas valve's flow rate.
