ServiceMag Expands Into Contractor Software Reviews

Nick Krane
Vice President of Content

If you've been reading ServiceMag for a while, you know us as a directory and trade publication for the appliance repair and HVAC industry in Southern California. Company listings, repair guides, industry news, technician interviews — that's been the bread and butter since day one, and it's not going anywhere.
But starting today, we're adding something new: an entire section dedicated to reviewing the software tools that contractors use to run their businesses.
Why We're Doing This
Here's the thing. We talk to shop owners and independent techs constantly. And one of the questions that comes up over and over again isn't about compressors or refrigerant — it's about software. Which dispatch platform is actually worth the money? Is there a field service app that doesn't require a computer science degree to set up? Should I bother with a CRM or just keep using spreadsheets?
The answers out there right now are mostly garbage. You search for "best field service management software" and you get a listicle that's really just ten affiliate links stacked on top of each other. Nobody writing those posts has ever ridden along on a service call or tried to reconcile invoices at 9 PM after a full day of appointments. They're content farms, not reviews.
We figured we could do better. So we did.
What Makes Our Reviews Different
Every review on ServiceMag comes from actual hands-on use and from talking to contractors who rely on these platforms day in and day out. We sign up for trial accounts. We click through every menu. We call customer support and see what happens. Then we talk to techs and owners who've been using the software for months or years and ask them what we missed.
We rate tools across four categories — ease of use, value for money, customer support, and features — on a 1 to 5 scale. We explain our methodology in full, because we think you should know exactly how we arrive at a score before you trust it.
We also don't take money from the companies we review. No affiliate links, no sponsored placements, no pay-to-play ratings. If a tool gets a 4.5 from us, it's because we genuinely think it's that good, not because someone wrote us a check.
What's Live Right Now
The initial launch covers the platforms we hear about most from contractors in the field:
- Field service management tools — the big ones like Housecall Pro, ServiceTitan, Jobber, and FieldEdge, along with some smaller players that deserve more attention than they get
- Accounting and invoicing software — QuickBooks, FreshBooks, and alternatives built specifically for service businesses
- Scheduling, dispatch, and CRM platforms — the tools that keep your day organized and your customer relationships from falling through the cracks
We've also launched head-to-head comparison pages for the matchups contractors ask about most — ServiceTitan vs. Housecall Pro, Jobber vs. FieldEdge, that kind of thing. Side-by-side pricing, features, and our take on which one fits which type of shop.
This Is Just the Start
We're going to keep adding reviews as we get our hands on more tools and talk to more users. If there's a platform you want us to look at, or if you've got strong opinions about something we've already reviewed, we want to hear from you. Shoot us a note at nick@servicemag.org.
The whole point of ServiceMag has always been to be genuinely useful to the people who do this work. The directory helps homeowners find good contractors. The guides help techs solve problems faster. And now the software reviews help shop owners make smarter decisions about the tools they're paying for every month.
That's the job. We're just expanding the definition a little.
