Whirlpool Recalls 250,000 Dishwashers Over Door Wiring Defect
Whirlpool Corporation has issued a voluntary recall covering approximately 250,000 dishwashers, coordinated with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The affected units were sold under both the Whirlpool and KitchenAid brand names, manufactured between March 2024 and November 2025.
The defect is a wiring harness routed too close to the door hinge mechanism. Repeated opening and closing chafes the wire insulation against the hinge bracket until the conductors are exposed. Short circuits follow. Whirlpool has received 47 reports of overheating so far, including 12 cases of melting or smoke and three small fires. No injuries reported.
Affected Models
The recall covers six model numbers across the two brands: the Whirlpool WDT750SAKZ, WDT740SALZ, and WDT970SAKH, plus the KitchenAid KDTM404KPS, KDTM604KPS, and KDTE204KPS. Serial numbers fall within the March 2024 through November 2025 manufacture window. The model and serial label sits on the left side of the door opening, visible when the door is open.
If the label is damaged or illegible, the model number is stored on the main control board and can be pulled through diagnostic mode. Worth checking on any unit that matches the model range, even if the sticker is unreadable.
The Fix
Whirlpool is supplying a replacement wiring harness and a protective loom sleeve that repositions the wire run away from the hinge contact point. The repair takes 45 to 60 minutes for an experienced tech: remove the inner door panel (Torx T20), swap the harness, route through the new loom, secure with wire ties, reassemble. Covered at no cost through authorized service centers.
For independent shops, the situation is familiar. You can't perform the recall repair on Whirlpool's behalf unless you're authorized. But you can (and should) check the recall list every time you're working on one of these models for an unrelated issue. A customer shouldn't be paying out of pocket for a recalled defect, and telling them about it before they find out themselves builds real trust.
If a customer needs to schedule the free repair, Whirlpool's recall line is 1-866-698-2538.
A Pattern Worth Watching
This is Whirlpool's second product safety recall in 12 months. Last year's recall hit select microwave models for a similar door-area wiring problem. Two recalls with the same root cause (wire routing in a hinge zone) in the same timeframe suggests a systemic design issue that may extend to other product lines sharing the same door assembly architecture.
Techs servicing any Whirlpool-family dishwasher, including Maytag, Amana, and JennAir units built on shared platforms, should make a habit of eyeballing the door hinge wiring during every service visit. Takes 10 seconds. Could prevent a house fire.
